I'm building my own dining room table, a rustic farmhouse style. What type of wood would be best or where is the best place to find used wood?

black walnut. It looks GREAT and is heavy and durable. If using a stain, it turns out just beautiful. And it is also a tradition wood used for this kind of thing. It is very heavy, and can be a bit pricey but if it is a table you will have for the rest of you life, it might be worth it. You can buy it at lumber stores.

Ooh, thanks! This is my first "big" project. I'm going on a hunt this weekend for some lumber. Thanks for the info!

I used an old farm door. Doors made pre-1980 were very sturdy and make great tables. Look cool too.

Thank you! Hhmmm. That would be ideal, but I have no idea where to get one....and I'm from farm country!

Well, you could dress up like a ninja in black and "acquire" a local barn door. Or....... you could put an add in a chuch bulletin. Or check the local antique store.
