Friend 324 / M / Simi Valley, CAI've had great success with either of these options: 1) egg crate foam- this isn't the most comfortable, but it's a cheap fix and generally will help get you through the weekend on a hard futon. Ballpark price= $20-40
2) memory foam matress pad- this is much thicker and more comfortable, but also more expensive. If you're sleeping on this futon regularly, I would STRONGLY reccomend purchasing this...it's about as close to a bed as you can get. I think they run close to $200, but they're well worth it to save your back, neck and shoulders in the long run.
I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions you might have. I'm happy to be of service.

wow, I really appreciate your detailed answer! Do you have any recommendations as to where I should look for memory foam? Thanks!Friend 324 / M / Simi Valley, CAI've found those memory foam pads at Costco for a little cheaper than the competition, but its a hit and miss as to when they have them in stock or what locations have them in stock.
Amazon.com might have something, but you'll pay shipping charges.
Big Lots/ Pic N Save stores may have something in their furniture depatment.
Walmart might have something...not sure about that one though.
Or... You could just go with any furniture wherehouse and pay whatever ridiculous price they're asking for it.
Just some thoughts from the top of my head. Any other questions...feel free to ask away!!

Friend 5M / Chicago, ILSounds ideal for layering foam rubber with the outter skin made up of memory foam. It takes a bit of skill with sewing though.
