I noticed people at airports pay lots of money to have their suitcases wrapped in ceran. Why? So their clothes stay fresh during the flight? In case the clothes stick together in case the suitcase pops open like a sausage?

hahahah, not quite, but close... the idea for the saran wrap is: yes to protect the bag. it will not keep your cloth fresh... since many bags are handled in violent ways at the airports...they break, and having them wrapped in plastic will keep all the stuff together (but it will not guarantee that it doesn't break)... I personally never use that... and I travel quite a bit. Wirklich lohnt es sich nicht... Schöne Abend hier in Berlin :)

my sense is that they do this for two reasons:

    1) to protect their luggage itself from damage to its exterior 2) to protect (or at least make obvious) any theft of items from their luggage.

there is another reason: depending on where you are travelling, your luggage may be exposed to lots of rain and may get completely soaking wet when getting loaded or unloaded from the plane.

I've never done this but I imagine it's to make it more obvious if someone has tampered with the case. Of course sometimes the TSA tampers with the case "officially" so that wouldn't help much, right? People might also worry about substances from other people's luggage leaking onto their priceless silk clothes. For instance, more people now have to check liquid products in their luggage. If the containers leak, it's all over everyone's luggage, potentially.
