Software Engineers
Aardvark is always looking for software engineers to join our team of a dozen senior developers. Aardvark engineers are careful implementers who are curious about how things work. They lean on large levers to get more done, faster, and enjoy applying new tools to the new opportunities afforded by today's web. They endeavor to solve real-world problems for real people (including the rest of the company), and aren't afraid to think big.
Required Skills for all Positions:
- Experience with web programming (scripting, widgets, browsers, web servers, etc.)
- Affinity for rapid prototyping and test-driven development
- Flexibility when faced with complex challenges
Pluses for all Positions:
- Strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails
- History of side projects in programming languages, open-source, and web programming
- Experience working on many parts of the software stack
- Previous startup experience
Systems Engineer
Degreed in CS (graduate preferred) with experience in large-scale distributed systems, network programming, or storage systems in Java, C++, or a similar language.

Front-End Web Developers
Aardvark is looking for front-end web developers to join our development team of a dozen senior engineers. Your primary responsibility will be to produce cross-browser compatible HTML and CSS that matches specifications from our user driven design team. Facility with JavaScript or Ruby on Rails is a strong plus as you will be collaborating with our developers working in these languages. The ideal candidate will enjoy working both on prototypes to be used in ongoing user research as well as polished pages for the Aardvark website.
Required Skills:
- Fluency in HTML and CSS
- Experience taking mockups and turning them into standards-compliant HTML/CSS
- Expertise in achieving cross-browser compatibility in IE, Firefox, and Safari
- Experience in implementing grid-based layouts in HTML/CSS
- Experience in an agile development environment
Pluses:
- Interest in user experience design and graphic design
- Experience in Javascript and Ruby on Rails
- History of side projects and interest in social media, browsers, and mobile web

Software Engineer, Cloud Computing
Aardvark is looking for a Software Engineer to help take our deployment process and release environment to the next level. Our current agile methodology and our use of Capistrano, TeamCity, and custom Rails tools enable the engineering team to release multiple times per week; our goal is to allow everyone to deploy continuously, with higher confidence and less effort. Your primary responsibility as part of the engineering team will be to help meet this goal, as well as others that are closely related, for example: streamlined machine image management, on-demand cluster instantiation, and improved monitoring capabilities. Taking full advantage of existing cloud infrastructure is important, so experience managing deployments in EC2 or similar hosted cluster environment is a must. Interest and facility with web services and the ability to program in Ruby or Python is also central to working with our dozen senior developers.
Required Skills:
- Rock-solid networking, web, and Unix skills
- Expertise in cloud infrastructure deployment and management, ideally EC2
- Experience with build and release management processes
- Knowledge of MySQL database administration
- Experience with monitoring and measurement tools
- Proficient in Ruby or Python
Pluses:

Research Scientists
Aardvark is looking for computer scientists to join our research team of four AI Ph.D.s working on innovative algorithmic solutions to a wide variety of search-related problems. Aardvark’s researchers work on problems related to profiling, query comprehension, routing, and evaluation, as well as large-scale analytics projects. Aardvark's researchers are familiar with the latest developments in natural language processing, machine learning, and quantitative analysis more generally. As part of this team, your ultimate goal is to facilitate the development of tools that exhibit continuous and assessable improvement along the lines and scale of Netflix's recommendation system or Alexa's traffic aggregator.
Requirements:
- Background in computer science, mathematics, physics, or other quantitative discipline
- Obsession with data and system improvement, tempered with pragmatic ability to prioritize
- Comfort working within a modern engineering environment (linux, system architecture, etc.)
- Ability to script experimental solutions and use off-the-shelf statistical analysis tools
Pluses:
- Experience with production engineering
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Industry experience with large scale algorithm challenges in the consumer Internet space
- Previous startup experience

User Experience and Visual Designer
Aardvark is looking for an exceptionally good User Experience designer to join our development team. Specialists need not apply: we're looking for someone who has mastered multiple design-related skillsets, from wireframes to visual design to usability tests and HTML and CSS coding. This is a diverse range of skills -- we're looking for someone truly talented who is passionate about great software with A-plus usability and polish. You will be working closely with the leaders of the company to build ambitious functionality that will define Social Search on the web. We have a killer technical team of about 20 people, and we're moving extremely quickly: in the past few months we've launched a new web interface with dozens of new features, an iPhone App, IM and Twitter interfaces, and lots more -- and we only plan on accelerating from here.
Required skills:
- Visual design for the web (for applications, not just brochureware)
- Wireframing and user flow design for web interfaces
Highly preferred:
- Startup Experience
- Experience with usability testing and basic user research
- Front-end coding in HTML and CSS
Pluses:
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
- Academic training in design
- Experience designing a successful consumer-facing web product with millions of users
